Two scientists from the Ice and Climate research group of the Arctic Centre participate in the Kinnvika expedition in spring 2008:

Emilie Beaudon Emilie in Svalbard in 2007
Exactly one year ago, Emilie came from France to Finland to work as a PhD student in glaciology at the Arctic Centre. Emilie is specialized in ice-chemistry and paleoclimatology; that means that she analyses the chemical composition of old ice and interprets the results in terms of past climate. Her research focuses on reconstructing Barents region climate over the last few thousand years integrating results into a multi-disciplinary set of projects aimed at understanding the evolution of Nordaustlandet (Svalbard) environment under changing climate.

Venkata Gandikota

Venkata is a PhD student of the Arctic Graduate School ARKTIS. He works on building a thermo mechanical flow model for a temperate alpine-type valley glacier in Svalbard in the Ice and Climate research group of the Arctic Centre. The intention is to calibrate models of intermediate complexity to current conditions and compute the sensitivity of the ice cap to climate change. The ultimate goal is to predict mass and geometry changes of the ice masses and the responses of the ecosystem for the coming 100 years based on climate scenarios from global or regional climate models.

Michael Gerasimoff, (45) M.Sc., P.Geo, P.Geol
AVG Project Consulting

Mike is a professional ice core driller with many years experience in the Canadian Arctic. He is especially skilled at using the HILDA prototype corer that was renovated by Ice Field Instruments in Whitehorse and
borrowed from the Canadian Geological Survey.
